DCP Overview

This post is for those of you reading that do not know where to go to find information about the DCP or simply want a little more information about the DCP. Before you even fill out the Application, I think it’s important to do your research about this program. You should know what you are getting yourself into. Some of the information I have here can be found on the DCP website and official blog, but some of it was found by doing my own independent research.

What is the DCP?
The DCP is a paid internship at a Disney Resort location.

Where is the DCP?
The DCP can be done in one of two locations; Walt Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California. Although, it is common knowledge that there are a lot more DCP spots available in WDW because it has 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, and all those resort hotels to operate on a daily basis.

For how much time must I participate in the DCP?
You can participate in the DCP for 4 months to 12 months. Below is chart that explains what sessions you can sign up for throughout the year. The black letters stand for the months. Go to the DCP website and official blog for more information about applying for the different sessions.

How do you know you are eligible to do the DCP?
There are quite a few requirements you must meet to do this program. I suggest going to the DCP website yourself to look at the list of requirements so that I don’t put some stuff here but leave something out.

What is the “Disney Look”?
At Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, they are famous for their friendly, classic appearance. This look is not a coincidence, but a result of their cast members' support of the Appearance Standards, or as they call it, the Disney Look. The Disney Look is a classic look that is clean, natural, polished and professional, and avoids "cutting edge" trends or extreme styles. Regardless of the position you hold with them, when you take pride in your appearance, you become a role model for those around you, and you convey the attitude of excellence that has become synonymous with the Disney name. The specifications you must meet concern things such as body alterations (piercings and tattoos), appropriate eyewear, appropriate styled/cut hair, unnaturally colored/dyed hair, and fingernail care. Go to the DCP website to get the most up-to-date requirements for the Disney Look. If you aren't willing to meet the “Disney Look,” this program may not be the one for you.

Does the DCP have housing?
Yes. There is housing for DCP participants in both WDW and DL. For WDW housing, the costs range from $80 to $105 (costs subject to change) per week depending on the size of the apartment and which apartment complex a participant is assigned to live in during his or her Program. Apartments have two to four bedrooms (with two participants in each bedroom). So you could have from one to seven other roommates. For DL housing, the rates are $140 per week and apartments may be studio, one- or two-bedroom (with up to three participants in each bedroom).

Housing costs are automatically deducted weekly from cast members' paychecks, so they don't have to worry about turning in a check at the beginning of the month. This cost includes all utilities such as electricity, cable hookup, waste disposal and local phone service; as well as the various resort-style amenities featured at each complex. In addition to this cost, there are other fees you must pay, so please go to the DCP website for that detailed information. While you are checking that on the website, also check out the housing policies. There are rules you must follow to live in the DCP housing. Educate yourself and read about them on the website.

Does the DCP have transportation?
Yes, if you are doing the program in WDW. There are buses that will take you anywhere you need to go (work, housing, grocery store, etc.). This transportation can’t be used if you are not staying in housing though. If you want to bring your own transportation (such as your own car), go to the DCP website for the requirements concerning that. If you are doing the DCP in DL, there is no transportation provided for you.

Can you receive college credit during the DCP?
Yes (is the short answer).  While on the Program, participants choose from multiple educational opportunities to incorporate into their program to enhance their experience. As part of their learning experience, participants can take several different types of Disney Education Courses, some of which are recommended for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE). However, there are many variables that go into which classes you will be able to take, and every college has their own ways of applying the college credit. Talk to your academic advisor and read more about it on the DCP website.

What are the DCP job positions/roles?
Here is a list of the roles: Quick-Service Food & Beverage, Merchandise, Attractions, Custodial, Main Entrance Operations, Lifeguard, Recreation, Full Service Food & Beverage, PhotoPass Photographer, Housekeeping, Hospitality, Hopper, Bell Services Dispatch/Greeter, Vacation Planner, Costuming, Character Attendant, and Character Performer. To learn more about the responsibilities of each role, please Look at my post titled "The Application & Role Descriptions.

In general, participants may work indoor and outdoors, depending on their role and will receive an hourly rate of pay. Participants will work the equivalent of a full-time schedule, so they must have full work availability, which includes working days, nights, weekends and holidays. Participants must also be flexible to work any time of day, including early morning or after midnight.
